US MACV-SOG Reconnaissance Team in Vietnam (Warrior, Band 159) In Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Activated A Joint Unconventional Task Force Known As The Studies And Observation Group MACV SOG As A Cover Its Mission Was To Conduct Analysis Of Lessons Learned In Combat By All Branches Of Service SOG S Real Mission Was To Conduct Covert Strategic Reconnaissance Missions Into Laos, Cambodia And South Vietnam As Well As Sabotage And Black Psychological Operations Ground, Air And Naval Assets Were Employed To Insert, Collect, Extract, And Otherwise Support These Operations This Book Tells The Complete Story Of These Covert Agents, From Their Recruitment And Training, Through To Their Deadly Black Ops In The Jungles Of Vietnam This is an awesome illustrated primer on the elite Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group MACV SOG This element was a highly classified, multi service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War Many of the missions were external or cross border operations into highly denied and politically sensitive areas SOG was established to conduct strategic reconnaissance missions in Republic of Vietnam South Vietnam , the Democratic Republic of Vietnam North Vietnam , Laos, and Cambodia also the unit was tasked to carry out snatch operations the capture of enemy prisoners, conducted rescue operations to retrieve prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia and conducted clandestine agent team activities and psychological operations Sometimes this unit is confused with the Phoenix program but in reality had nothing to do with it This book does an excellent job at describing the mission, organization and operations of SOG As well as coverage of the recruitment process and training of the operators I particularly liked this portion of the book that describes recon team leader training and the coverage of patrol tactics Overall this is an excellent primer for the uninitiated and a good reference for the study of military history. A nice tribute to these dedicated and talented professional soldiers It is not about glory or worship but rather a factual and balanced tone concerning the very challenging missions those soldiers performed Photos were each worth a thousand words and enhanced the writing Charts were also helpful I would have given it 5 stars had it discussed the fact that many of their missions were compromised by a South Vietnamese officer working for North Vietnam which is discussed in SOG by Plaster. These guys were truly heroes God bless them An excellent, in depth, description of the Valiant Green Berets and their indig counterparts Much of the world is still not aware of the bravery and selfishness of theses men against overwhelming odds The later in the War, the dangerous it became due to LBJ s bombing halt in Laos and Cambodia. Mostly Table of Organization and Equipment TOE information Since I ve read a few other books on the subject this wasn t very interesting or new information Had a understood this, I probably wouldn t have purchased the book. That said, it is fairly well written and does contain a bit of description about the experiences of recon teams in MACV SOG. was ok
