Jansson, T: Memoirs Of Moominpappa (Moomins Collectors' Editions) Special collectors hardback editions lovingly restored to original designs I love these editions so beautifully produced, so solid and permanent, just as Tove Jansson deserved Philip Pullman A beautiful collectors edition of this classic Moomin story, using original s and s cover artwork, gorgeous endpapers and including for the first time a special prologue written by Tove but never before published in the UK One cold and windy autumn evening many years ago a newspaper parcel was found on the doorstep of the Home for Moomin Foundlings In that parcel I lay, quite small and shivering with cold So begins the remarkable Memoirs of Moominpappa, a book written to delight his dear son Moomintroll and friends What follows is a story about storytelling itself Moominpappa weaves one fabulous tale after another, writing at night to read aloud by day and featuring not only the fearless, adventurous author but also the fathers of Sniff and Snufkin the rather muddled Muddler and the carefree Joxter Add to this mix the genius inventor Hodgkins and a grand finale in which Moominpappa rescues a shipwrecked Moominmamma from the waves and the fun becomes irresistible The Memoirs of Moominpappa, was first published in the UK inunder the title The Exploits of Moominpapa In the early s Tove Jansson substantially revised this text, redrawing pictures and reinstating her preferred title This is the very first time the revised edition has become available in the UK From the publisher of The Invisible Child and The Fir Tree all proceeds to Oxfam here s the Moomin gift editions I m 41 and long have I loved the Moomins and are perhaps my favourite of all children s stories.Tove Jansson created lovable and quirky characters, characters that you instantly feel reflect your own personality, with a simple message that a simple way of life and a life of acceptance is best, set in a beautiful land where nature is also a leading character. Here is the fourth in the series, The Exploits of Moominpappa, in other words Moominpappa s memoirs that he is seen writing during the previous two books It takes him from being brought up in an orphanage and his escape, to his adventures with his first friends Hodgkins, the Joxter and the Muddler to finally how he met Moominmamma Running alongside are interludes where Moominpappa is reading these memoirs to his son Moomintroll, Sniff and Snufkin who discover that the Muddler and the Joxter in fact are their fathers.Unfortunately the story is not as magical as the previous two, which may have something to do with the fact that Moominpappa is rather lacking in humility, in my opinion It is very enjoyable nonetheless and part of a life affirming series. Here we have the fourth book in the Moomins series, and this one concentrates on Moominpappa, who as we all know has been engaged with writing his memoirs for some time As he writes different chapters, so he reads them aloud to Moomintroll and his friends, giving us a glimpse into his past, although as he admits he has left out certain tales so as to produce a nice clean book that will inspire other Moomins to be like him. From being abandoned at an orphanage and being told that the alignment of the stars at his birth makes him quite special, and unlike other Moomins, here we see if these predictions come true With meeting others and the voyage of the Oshun Oxtra so we meet new characters, including the Mymbles, and thus Little My who reminds me of someone I know. With the usual wonderful illustrations this is a fun tale for children, with fantastical tales, including meeting royalty and capturing clouds, as well as meeting a ghost and Moominmamma Where this comes into its own for us adults is in the verbosity of Moominpappa, and how he thinks himself better and intelligent than he is, with his use of flowery language and pomposity This is also in some ways a parody of memoirs and makes you think of those notorious unreliable ones over the years, as well as of course those by politicians, who always seem to leave out the truthful and juicy bits In all then, another wonderful tale in the series. I have read and reread this marvellous book many many times over the years since it first introduced me to the Moomin family and friends Each time I still feel the tingle of magic and melancholy which makes Tove Jansson s work so precious I cannot possibly recommend all her books enough but this one holds a special place in my heart. Jansson takes on the voice of one of her beloved characters to write this book, and it is seamless I could feel that Moominpappa, and not Tove Jansson, has written this book It is a delightful read and an interesting backstory to anyone that likes the Moomins series I enjoyed it immensely, and highly recommend it. Bought this book as part of a larger Tove Jansson collection, thinking it will come in the size and shape of the book in the picture The book I received was a bit smaller and with a different cover Either way the cover illustrations are very nice but I wish it was advertised for what it is, in case other people like me are wanting a complete collection of Tove s books Happened for 2 of the second hand books I bought. Love these stories. Really great book A typical Moomin adventure book that I got really lost in while reading to my son I think I may have even enjoyed it than he did. Love it thank you
